Short answer: a handful of curated directories, one wedding magazine, Reddit, and a surprisingly large number of blog posts written by other photographers. Which ones depends on the AI service, and one of the four big services did not show a single readable source in our measurements.
This is not a guess and it is not a survey. It comes from measurements where we ask real couple questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, three times each, and keep every answer together with the links the service showed. The method page explains how that works.
First: not every AI service shows its sources
Before you can ask which websites an AI service uses, you have to know whether it tells you. In September 2026 we measured two photography businesses in Sweden with our current setup, 117 answers per service, and counted how often each service showed at least one source link.
| AI service | Answers with at least one source | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 117 of 117 | 100 percent |
| Claude | 100 of 117 | 85 percent |
| ChatGPT | 62 of 117 | 53 percent |
| Gemini | 0 of 117 | 0 percent |
Wedding Mentions measurement, September 2026. Two photography businesses in Sweden, 39 questions asked three times to each service. Gemini returned links in other measurements, but only as Google redirect addresses that do not show the real website.
So when someone tells you what ChatGPT reads, ask how they know. Half the time ChatGPT does not say. Gemini, in our measurements, never says in a way you can follow. Perplexity always does, which is why Perplexity is the easiest service to learn from even if your couples mostly use ChatGPT.
The websites that came up most
In six full reports for wedding photographers in Sweden, Germany and Belgium, these were the most cited websites across all four services:
| Website | What it is | Times cited |
|---|---|---|
| mywed.com | Curated photographer directory with rankings | 277 |
| wezoree.com | Directory and awards | 204 |
| wpja.com | Wedding Photojournalist Association, awards and member directory | 150 |
| thewed.com | Wedding magazine with best of lists | 130 |
| reddit.com | Forum threads where couples ask each other | 93 |
| fearlessphotographers.com | Curated directory with awards | 68 |
Wedding Mentions measurement, September 2026. Six full photographer reports, 20 questions each, four AI services, three runs.
After those six, the list is long and flat, and almost all of it is websites run by other photographers. And mostly not their front pages. Of 4,454 links to photographer websites in answers that showed sources between July and September 2026, five in six pointed to a specific page: a venue guide, a price page, a post about a specific castle or city hall.
What these websites have in common
Look at the top of the list and a pattern shows up. Almost every directory there is curated. MyWed, Wezoree, WPJA and Fearless Photographers all pick, rank or award photographers rather than listing everyone who pays. A ranked list gives an AI service something it can quote: a named photographer, a place, a reason.
The second pattern is pages that answer one question well. A photographer blog post written as a guide to getting married at a specific venue is exactly the kind of page that turns up in the source lists for questions about that venue. That is the part you control yourself.
Your own website matters more than people think
In our September measurement of 18 wedding businesses in Sweden, Norway, Germany, Belgium and Canada, we also counted how often the measured business had its own website cited:
198
answers where Perplexity cited the website of the measured business
93
answers where Claude did
69
answers where ChatGPT did
0
answers where Gemini showed it as a readable source
So the same website is read very differently depending on the service. Perplexity leans on your own pages. Gemini, as far as anyone outside Google can see, leans on something else, which in practice means it matters what other people write about you.
How to see which websites are cited for your own business
You do not need us to do a first version of this. Open Perplexity in a private browser window and ask the question a couple would ask, in their words: who are the best wedding photographers for a castle wedding near your city, or which photographer to book for a wedding at a specific venue. Perplexity lists its sources under every answer. Write them down.
Ask the same question three times, on different days if you can. You will see that the list moves, which is the single most important thing to understand about AI answers. One answer is a snapshot. A site that shows up in two of three answers is a real source for that question. A site that shows up once is noise until it shows up again.
Then do the same with five or six different questions: one broad, one about price, one about style, one about a venue you work at often. After that you have a rough map of the directories, magazines and photographer blogs that the services lean on in your market. That map is worth more than any general list, including the one above. Our free check runs four of these questions against ChatGPT and Perplexity for you in about a minute, and the free method article explains the manual version in more detail.
What to do with this
- Find out which directories are cited in your market before you pay for any. The six above are what came up for photographers in our markets. A venue in the UK or a planner in the US will see different names. Paying for a listing that no AI service reads is money spent on the wrong thing.
- Write the page that answers the question. If couples ask for a photographer for a specific venue, a real guide to that venue on your own site is one of the few sources you fully control. Our guide for photographers goes through how to write it.
- Get written about. For Gemini in particular, what matters is what is said about you elsewhere: features, award pages, planners and venues that link to you.
- Check more than one service. Being cited by Perplexity tells you very little about ChatGPT, and nothing about Gemini.
What this cannot tell you
These counts come from our own customers and our own questions, mostly in Sweden and the rest of Europe. They show which sites the services leaned on for those questions in July to September 2026, not a permanent ranking. AI services change what they read, sometimes from one week to the next, which is why we measure the same questions every month instead of trusting one snapshot.
We measure what AI services say. We do not, and nobody can, make them say something.
Questions people ask next
Does ChatGPT use directories like WPJA or MyWed to recommend wedding photographers?
Sometimes. In our measurements ChatGPT showed sources in about half of its answers, and when it did, curated directories and the websites of other photographers both appeared. Perplexity cites directories like MyWed and Wezoree much more openly, so it is the easiest place to see which directories matter in your market.
Why does Gemini not show which websites it used?
In our measurements Gemini either showed no sources or only Google redirect links that do not reveal the real website. That makes it impossible to say from the outside which pages Gemini relied on. What other people publish about you is the safest bet for Gemini.
Should I pay for a directory listing to show up in ChatGPT?
Not before you know that the directory is actually cited for the questions couples ask in your area. Check which sources the AI services show for your market first. A directory that never appears in the answers will not change them.
Does my own website matter if AI cites directories?
Yes. In our September measurement Perplexity cited the website of the measured business in 198 answers and Claude in 93. Five in six links to photographer websites pointed to a specific page, like a venue guide, rather than the front page.
